MCAS is Over!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

You have completed all of the sessions of the 6th grade MCAS exams. You should feel very proud of yourself. Your teachers are all very proud of how hard you worked and how prepared you were. We want to take a few minutes to reflect on MCAS and all of your preparation.

Please answer the following questions. As always, make sure your answers represent your best 6th grade work.

1) What was the most helpful thing (or things) you did to successfully prepare for this year's MCAS exams?

2) What will you do differently to prepare for the MCAS?

3) What was the hardest part of the exams? (think of both ELA and Math)

4) What were the easiest parts of the exams? (again, both ELA and Math)

5) What else should your teachers know before we prepare a new group of students to take the MCAS again next year? (What should stay the same, what should be different, what you liked, what you didn't like, etc.)

  1. The most helpful thing to prepare for a test is to study, pay attention, and take notes. Study for a test can help you a lot because you learn more than you need to just in case its on the test. Paying Attention is really important for MCAS because if you don’t and you miss out on the important things you will be stuck on some questions. Taking notes is an excellent way to prepare for a test because it helps stick into your mind and stay there for when you need them for the test.

Next time when I have a test I will try to take more notes so I can come up with better responses and answers for the OR.

The hardest part of the ELA open response was that I had to write a reasonable essay so they MCAS people could understand and apresiate my essay. The hardest thing about the Math MCAS was some of the multiple choice and OR because some of them I didn’t even know or even think I learned, and I was having a hard time with it but I got threw it.

The easiest part of the ELA and MATH MCAS was some of the easy MC was really fast to do and I had no problem or struggle with it. Teachers should prepare for reminding the students to take notes and study. What I liked about the teachers preparing us for MCAS was that they kept repeating and telling kids to pay attention so they could pass the MCAS. There was nothing I dislike about what Ms.Mcgoldrick, Ms.lider and Mr. Roper taught us.

  2. The most helpful thing I did to prepare for MCAS was studies my math review book. The book was very helpful because I learned what the formulas were for area, perimeter, circumference, and volume. I think the 6th grade mathematics reference sheet was a huge help because I couldn’t remember the area for a circle when I was taking MCAS. For the ELA MCAS we practiced a using context clue. I think that was very helpful because it helps me understand the passage better.

The next time I do MCAS I will refrain from looking at the clock because it makes it seem like time goes by fast every time I look up. During the ELA MCAS I took my time because it was a bit difficult, but it did not help that I kept looking at the clock because I thought I was losing time. I will try to go to sleep earlier on the night before MCAS because the last time I had problem trying to sleep when I was thinking about MCAS. On the bright side MCAS was not as hard as I thought is was going to be. But I still wish I would have fell asleep earlier.

The hardest part of the math MCAS was the open responses. I had trouble making sense of one-word problems. The most difficult part of the ELA exam was that I didn’t know some of the meanings to the words on the multiple-choice questions. Also the open response was tricky because it had many parts that made me think about it for a while. I had to go back a reread the passage over and over again.

The easiest part of the math exam was the multiple choices. I think it was very easy because we learned all of the things we needed to. The questions were on area, perimeter, negatives and reasoning. Also explaining the open responses were easy to because I like writing and explaining the math problems made me understand how I got my answer.

My teachers should know the reference sheet was very helpful and it should be giving to students earlier in the ear so that they have more time to study the formulas. I think that you should teacher a brief lesson of negatives to the class before MCAS because there are some multiple-choice questions that deal with adding and subtracting negative numbers. I liked the circle lesson because I didn’t know how to find the circumference, diameter, and radius. Other than that I think everything should stay the same. I learned a lot this year and my favorite lesson was the fractions, decimals, and percents.

Before the mcas test we learned about math and
science. This morning when we had to take the mcas she made us breakfast and that helped us to consecrate. She gave us gum and snacks during the test.

if I do stuff differently to prepare for the mcas. I would have more sleep and in the morning I would eat breakfast and be ready for the test. The important thing is sleep because if you don’t have enough of sleep you will get tired during the mcas test.

The hardest part for the ELA mcas is the reading part and the open response it took me a long time to finish the open response. The hardest part of the math mcas test is the open response. In every open response it had 3 questions and it was really hard.

There was no easiest part for ELA mcas. I had a easiest part of the math mcas test and the part was the short response. That was the only easiest part of the math mcas test. You just had to read the question and circle the correct answer.

Before the next year mcas test is to try your best to do the ELA mcas and the Math mcas test. What should be different is to change the mcas date and put it in June. What I liked about the mcas test is doing the open response because if you do the work you will learn more about the ELA mcas and the math mcas test.

  4. MCAS:

1.One thing that I did that successfully prepared me for MCAS is when I would study and stay focus. Then also I made sure that when we had our breakfast that Ms. Mcgoldrick, and Ms.lider had for us. What I also lastly did was make sure that I got a good sleep and good source of nutrition.

2.I don’t think that I would do anything different to prepare myself in the MCAS I think that all the things that I did for MCAS already was good and would still help me get good grades on MCAS. Like getting a good sleep and eating a god breakfast. So no I wouldn’t do anything different.

3.Hardest part of the exams was when there were tricky questions I had to guess them because I didn’t really know the answer so I couldn’t really have the correct answer if I guessed. Then also another hard part is when I couldn’t talk because everyday im usually talking with my best friends Gabrielle, Jamilah, Soyini… Then the last hardest part for me is when I had t sit still in my seat waiting for the test to be over and finally have no more test to take.

    4. What were the easiest parts of the exam was just doing the exam al you really had to do was just do the exam and try your hardest. Put your best effort into the exam and do what you can. Then also the last easiest thing for me was just having fun even though I got mad sometimes when I didn’t know the answer.

    5. Well I really don’t know what else the teachers could do because they did a good job helping us stay focus and provide us with snack and the breakfast. But another thing that they could do I keep providing them with snake and the good pancakes and waffles that they served. So this should stay the

  6. MCAS Is Over

The most helpful thing that I did this year to successfully prepare for MCAS was study. Studying is the most helpful thing that you can do to pass the MCAS. I studied the night before the ELA MCAS and the Math MCAS. Even if you think that you know things for sure. Still study them. You never know what can happen.
What I will do differently to prepare for MCAS is go to bed earlier. This year I went to bed late the day before MCAS. That was the worst decision ever. Go to bed around 9:00 PM not 10:30 or 11:30. Because if you go to bed late then you wont get enough rest. And if you don’t get enough rest then you will most definetly be tired before the MCAS test.
The hardest part of the exam was the open response. I chose the open response as my hardest thing on the MCAS because I really don’t write a lot of information. And that effect’s my grade. Even if I read the question more than once. And go back to the little box on the first page that says How To Answer An Open Response Question.
The easiest part of the MCAS was the Multiple Choice Questions. I know for sure that I had gotten about 90% of all Multiple Choice Questions on both sessions right. I am confident about that because they were too easy for me. There were probably like 2 Multiple Choice Questions on both sessions that I struggled with. But the rest were easy. Even though they were easy I still had to show my work. Because once you show your work then you are even more confident with your answer.
And last but not least is what my teachers should know before they prepare a new group of students to take MCAS next year. They should know that cooking breakfast in the morning was an excellent idea. Because if people didn’t eat at home or eat breakfast. Then they can get pancakes in their classroom. And what I liked was that we had gotten to keep the mechanical pencils. I thought that also was very nice of the teachers.

  9. What I did that was helpful for me to prepare for mcas was to make sure I had everything I needed. I made sure I had extra pencils, pens, and highlighters. I also did was when I was done with my homework I study a little of math and ELA. Then I would get a piece of paper and do problems on it. After I would have my mom check it to see is it was right. I would also read stories to improve my reading skills. That what I would do to prepare for MCAS.

Hat I would do different to prepare for class was see if the teacher would print out articles to read with questions. I would also find articles online and try to find the main idea. Also highlight the main ideas. I would also do is have my sister check them to see if they are right or get the answers off the Internet. I would also do is get more sleep. I would go to bed maybe at 9:40 or 10:00. I would also make sure I have a healthy dinner instead of fried food.

The hardest parts of the MCAS were the choosing questions. That was the hardest part because, there way one then one good answer. And my mind couldn’t really choose what answer to pick. But in math the hardest parts for math was the measuring. I would say the measuring because, between the number sometimes I get confused with which line is which’s. These were the hardest parts.

The easiest parts of them MCAS was reading. The reading and highlighting was the easiest. I would say this because, the reading easy I already know how to read. And with highlighting I know it a lot because, my teachers helped me even more. So right now I know what to highlight and what not to highlight.

What I think should stay the same is everything. I would say this because, the MCAS was easy. But some parts were hard, but not a lot. I think we would need more boot camp. In ELA and math. I think we should get a pack to work on in ela and math. And maybe have a work sheet with all of the words on it with definition. Maybe get the sheet with the formulas a litter bit earlier. What I liked the most was boot camp. But I would change anything.

  10. The most helpful things were sleep, preparing for both tests, and eating a really delicious breakfast. Preparing for both tests a couple days let me remember some stuff to help me during the test. A good night sleep let me stay awake during the tests. A healthy breakfast let me finish both tests. These things are really important.

What I would do differently to prepare for MCAS is sleep even earlier. That way when I wake up I can be ready to go to school on time. I will also have more time to eat breakfast. I can probably pass MCAS next year if I do this. I know I will,

The hardest part of the exams was trying to keep focus and thinking about one of the questions you didn’t understand. Keeping focus is kind of hard when you get hungry or when you hear noise. Thinking about the same questions you didn’t understand are more likely open responses. Open responses are sometimes really hard questions. Those tests were kind of hard.

The easiest part of both exams was answering questions that we could answer. Easy questions like that were questions that we were preparing for. Those questions had let us use what we learned to solve questions easily. Questions like that can let us speed up throughout the exams. Really easy questions.

The teachers should know to give more snacks with at least 30 more seconds of a bathroom break. That you should change. I didn’t like how fast things went. I liked having snack that’s when we got to take a little break from the exams. I wonder how you will make this work?

  11. 1.The most helpful thing I did to successfully prepare for this year’s MCAS exams was to study any time that I had. I also pay attention to every reason the teachers gave us on mcas boot camp day and what really helps me was the last year test that the kids from last year had taken. Anther thing that help me on mcas day is when I was focus. Anther thing that helped me was when we took the last year mcas and we got into different rooms just like the macs. And also anther thing that helped me was the breakfast the teachers made for us and the snack they gave.

2.Well if it was up to me to do something different for the mcas I really wouldn’t change anything thing . I wouldn’t change anything because the day before I went to sleep early and not study the day before the mcas because u took that day to relax .I liked how every thing trun to be.

3.The hardest part on the exams was sitting in the chair for hours and not be able to talk. Anther thing that was hard for me to do while I was taking the test was that I didn’t like the sit I was in because behind was a person who kept talking and at one point I lost me focus.

4.The easiest part of the exams was that most of the questions I was able to answer them and if I wasn’t sure if an answer than the thing that I did was read the question over and than I would took at my answers and see witch one makes senses.

    5. One thing that the teachers would do differently the teachers should stare giving their kids few mcas test so that when mcas day come they know what to expect and they would be a little ahead with the things they have to do. Anther thing the teachers should do is make sure that the kids that are taking the test could work in the sit that you give them ad also one thing I didn’t like was that the room we were talking the test in was to cold .So I think that the teacher should pick a room that is not to cold or to hot .

  12. • The most helpful thing this year that we did was study. This whole year, we studied for ELA Mcas and Math Mcas. We even had a fun. Then, Ms. Coleman, Ms. Lider and Ms. McGoldrick, all made sure that the day before Mcas, we didn’t have homework and got a good night sleep. Those are some of the things that prepared me for Mcas.
    • Every thing this year was good. I really wouldn’t change anything. Every thing that we did helped me on ELA and Math Mcas. So I think that I would keep the same routine going. Because it helped me learn and I understood the listen plans.
    • The hardest part of Mcas was ELA, because I hate reading. But I still did the Mcas. And in Math Mcas, I didn’t understand one question, but I still tried my best to answer the question. Also, the hardest part was sitting still for a long time, because I just love moving. And hand was hurting so bad because of all the writing we was doing on the Open Responds. The thing that I hated and that was hard the Open Responds questions, because of how long that were.
    • Some of the easies part were Math, because I love Math, so I think I did really great on that part. ELA, not so good. But ELA was kind of easy to me. I love the exams, because they were kind of easy, but not too easy. If I didn’t have help from my teachers, I think I would have failed the Mcas and I would taking it again.
    • Teachers should know that Mcas is harder for some kids and we should have more to study. Keep the same routine but do it in different orders. And make sure that the new students are learning and not playing around because it happens a lot. Hope the students next year do great.

  13. • The most helpful part was when I thing I do to is studying in math because we had 2 resources to use. Like the mastering math book and Math MCAS review book. The whole “mastering math” book had all the information that I need to know. The main reason is to sleep early & eat a great breakfast.

    • Next year I would not sleep late & make sure I try very well to succeed on the MCAS. Make sure I can do the best I can because this year I felt like I needed to give up really bad! But I keep going to

    • The hardest exam was the ELA exam because there was an open response on every story. Some stories had questions that really didn’t have to with the passage or what was the story about. I felt that the questions made no sense at point!

    • The easiest exam was the Math exam because some questions I understood and some questions took me sometime to think about really hard! I feel that the Math MCAS this year was very easy for everyone I think!

    • The teachers should show the new 6th graders how to do a lot vocabulary and more thesis statements for the Ela MCAS

  14. 1) I studied the answer sheet, which I think helped me a lot. The formula sheet was handed out perfectly because we had lots of time to study. The formula sheet helped me understand all the Mcas a whole lot better. Another thing that was helpful was the Mcas review book. The Mcas review book helped me see what I could see inside the real Mcas.

2 Next year the thing I would do differently to prepare for the Mcas would be do something like the Mcas review earlier than when we did receive it. The reason I would change that is because I think I could see what I need to learn more of before the Mcas. Another thing I would change would have to be a water bottle because during the Mcas I’m always so thirsty. So next year it’s a plain to bring a water bottle.

    3) The hardest parts of the math exam was the l\w\h because I would always get them mixed up. I think I should find a simple way to memorize them though. The hardest part of the ELA exam was the reading. I think it was the reading because I kept on getting aggravated with the reading cause I wanted the test to be over so I started sweating.

    4) The easiest part of the ELA exam was the multiple-choice question. The multiple-choice question were easy because they we very simple, and when I looked back in the article it made it even easier. The easiest part of the math exam would have to be the circumference questions because they were simple because they were taught to me in a easy to remember way.

    5) I think our teachers should know that the way that they are teaching everything is great. Keep going at the same rate to because you’re teaching everything at good times. I especially want you guys to know that the way your are teaching the things is a good way for us to remember a lot of things.

    ReplyDelete
  15. #1) the most helpful thing that we did to prepare for the MCAS was that we got to study most of the things that were on the test. The things we got to study were circumference, area and, perimeter. And we also practiced our open response. We also did polygons. Another thing that helped use was the shape because there were a lot of questions that involved shapes.
#2) I would change the fat that we got our MCAS red book at the middle/end of the school year. The reason I say that is that we should leave the big orange book for class and then take the red book home to study. I would take it home so then we wouldn’t have two books to worry about. Other then that the students you should encourage your students to do their homework. They need to do their best because they haven’t seen the real world yet.
#3) the hardest part on the ELA was that we had to stay for maybe 2 hours and read and answer questions. That was hard because I like to read but not for that long. The math was easier for me because I like math. Also it was things that I already know by listening to the lessons from class. If you pay attention in class you wont have a hard time with any of the test given.
#4) the easiest part is when you are about to finish because then you feel confident and you do your best. Also you try to get the answer right. That’s why you take so long to finish. I do that to but even though I don’t like tests I start confident. Every child same as some adults hate tests.
#5) I would never change anything the teachers teach. They teach in a way I don’t think anyone else could. All the teachers I’ve had were boring. These teachers show discipline when needed and they are also funny in time to time. That’s why I would not change their way of teaching.

  16. The most helpful thing that I did to help me was studying for the Mcas. Studying helped me know what I had to expect when I took the test this year. I think studying can get you prepared for anything but this test is the thing that I really needed to study for.
Next year I will try to get more sleep before Mcas. Even though I went to sleep pretty early I still wish that I went to sleep earlier than I did this year. When I was taking the Mcas I was a little tired and the only thing that kept me awake knew that if I didn’t do this test, I would be in big trouble. Now that I know how it feels to be tired during Mcas I wont do that again for 7th grade Mcas.
The hardest part was the open responses. I say this because when I did the open responses it said that you had to show all your work and do all this extra work that you really don’t want to do. We did learn about something called show & tell but that doesn’t make the open responses any easier. It is a lot easier to just write down the answer and then move on to another question, but its not that easy when you’re taking tests.
The easiest part of the Mcas was the multiple choices. I say this because the multiple choice questions already come with the answers, so all you have to do is figure out which one it is. With the open response you have to figure out the answers and show how you got it, but with the multiple choice all you have to do is find out the answer and cross it off. Multiple choices is the easiest part of the Mcas and honestly I think that will always be the easiest part of Mcas.
I think that we should continue to have breakfast. Everyone says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so I think it’s a good idea to make sure that all the students have breakfast. Most people would just think that the students ate their breakfast at home and would let them take the test even if they didn’t have breakfast.

  17. 1) One of the most helpful was getting a lot of
Sleep. That helped a lot cause when I got to school I wasn’t sleepy at all. Also studying also helped me be successful during MCAS cause it helped me with hard questions, so I just have to memorizing it all. Plus eating cereal in the morning and then eating at school too. And having a snack half way through the morning. Cause without things helping me I don’t I would of made it.
    2) Well I don’t think I will prepare differently for MCAS cause I will need to do the same thing to survive during next years MCAS exams.
    3) One of the hardest things was inside the room it was extremely hot but luckily I was sitting next to the window. Also the open response questions were hard cause it made me thinks really deep in my brain to remember.
Plus not talking was hard cause the only time that we could talk was when we had break half way through the morning.
    4) The easiest part of the MCAS was the multiple answer questions and short answers
I did all of them so I can put all my focus on the open response questions.
    5) The teachers should add some fruits like cherries and strawberries some fruit that students like.

P.S Our seventh grade teachers will not cook breakfast for us like our sixth grade teachers did. Sincery,

  18. It may seem strange, but I believe drinking milk helped me. I don’t drink milk (And I mean I don’t drink it, period.) so I guess maybe I needed the stuff in milk to help me. Or that’s what my parents told me. I think maybe you should eat healthy foods/drinks that you avoid. Because he nutrients in them can really help you.

Next time that I prepare for the MCAS I won’t worry as much as I have this year. It seems pointless to sit there worrying my head off when regardless if I worry or not I’ll still have to take the MCAS. It’s like dreading a punishment, but you just have to suck it up, prepare yourself and accept it when it comes.

I believe that the hardest part of the MCAS was the open response. I felt like I was under pressure, having to show them all my work and knowing that every little thing I did was going to be evaluated and graded. I also didn’t enjoy the fact that there were so many. I would have much rather dealt with short answer which I also dislike.

In my opinion, the easiest part of the MCAS was the multiple choice. I didn’t have to explain things or write it out in detail, unlike the open-response. The questions that I just knew, I could just bubble it in without worrying that I’ll lose points for not writing everything out. Furthermore, I believe that it’s easy to go over and check your work if you don’t have the pressure of knowing that the work itself was going to be graded.
I think the breakfasts should definitely stay the same, because many kids skip breakfast at home or at the school because they dislike the taste. I think one thing that should change is that there were so little chairs in Ms. McGoldrick’s room while we were there. But, what I really enjoyed was the dress for success and that we could wear something other than our uniform. However I disliked the fact that the room felt so crowed when we toke the test.

I think that the scientist need to find more things to prevent the oils from spilling every I think that one of the things that could prevent the oil from spilling is if they get a boat with a big fan under it that they go around and they fan the oil out and they could get a big top and but it on top of the big tub that spilling the oil out and get it and cover it than get the tub and bring it up and get it out the ocean and get the tub and empty the tub out and clean out the ocean and use the soap and clean out the poor cute :} animals that is covered with oil and clean them up so they wouldn’t die.
    2. I think that we use oil for a lot of thing we use oil for our cars, trains, bus, airplanes, and our bikes I know that we need oil to use those stuff because oil is really important to use on your car because if you don’t but gas on your car your car will not go it will just stop and gas comes from oil and that happens to all the stuff that we use or drive or make if you don’t have oil on it, it will not work. I think that we could help a lot by saving the planet I think that this could help not to need that much oil in the future because by helping the planet now we could save plants, oil, gas and trees, by helping the planet it will help us because by getting a friend and going to school on the same car you are using less gas that is why it think by saving the planet could help all of us in the future and I think if we all go on saving the planet.com you could see how we could use less gas less oil and help all the animals that right now covered with oil and dieing.

    3. I think that we need to prevent the oil from spilling because in the future we don’t want any thing to happened to the others so I think by us helping now we could help the earth and we could help the people that is dieing know and all the animals that are dieing. I think that the problem with the oil spilling is that they can not find a was to stop the oil from spilling and they are trying to find a way that they could stop the oil from spilling and to take the big tub out of the ocean so I think that is a big problem for them and also the oil is spilling from the under ground of the ocean and it keeps coming up and now if you go to that ocean you will be able to see how the wave threw some of the oil in the sand so if you touch it I turns in to oil and I think that is also a big problem. I think that the last big problem that they have that I think is that the ocean water could spread around and the oil could go 50 miles from were it is at now so I think that is another big problem. Thank you :]
